THOMOND ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The first lecture organised by the Thomond Archaeological and Historical Society for the new year will be held in Mary Immaculate College, South Circular Road, Limerick on 28 January 2019, in room T .1. 17 Tara Building Revival in Ireland’ at 8 pm. The lecture will be about ‘AWN Pugin and the Gothic Revival in Ireland’. Augustus W N Pugin (1812-1852) shaped Gothic architecture in Ireland, leaving his mark on landmark churches and other buildings across Ireland. Although Pugin did little work in Co. Limerick, he was proceeded by other architects who worked in the Gothic style in Limerick, notably the Pains and the Fogerty’s, and his influence can be seen in his work in Adare and throughout Co Limerick in the work of J. J. McCarthy and other architects.
The lecturer will be (Rev Canon Professor) Patrick Comerford, who is priest-in-charge of the Rathkeale and Kilnaughtin Group of Parishes and Canon Precentor of Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick and Saint Flannan’s Cathedral, Ennis, Co. Clare. He is a former Adjunct Assistant Professor in Trinity College Dublin and for many years lectured in Anglicanism, Liturgy and Church History at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. He has been cataloguing Pugin’s work in Ireland for years.
