Thomond Archaeological and Historical Society.

The next lecture to be hosted by the Thomond Archaeological and Historical Society will focus on the settlement patterns in County Limerick. Dr Gerard Curtin, who is a native of Ballyhahill, County Limerick, holds a Ph.D in history and is the author of four books on social history and geography of County Limerick, will discuss the growth and development of small clusters of houses in a variety of locations from the early nineteenth century onward. These were smaller than villages and numerous with seventy such clusters in 1840 compared to forty-one villages in the county. Most of these survived into modern times, either as identifiable units or grew into larger villages or towns. The lecture will also focus on the factors that led to their growth and their distinctive and interesting placenames. The venue for this lecture is Room T 1. 17 Tara Building Mary Immaculate College, South Circular Road, Limerick at 8.00 pm on Monday 4 March 2019. All are welcome.
