Can you imagine being at the All Ireland Community Games in Athlone
last Sunday at the final of the under 14 modern dance. Seventeen
counties have entered and the announcer is calling out the medal
winners. He calls Clare for fourth place, bronze to Monaghan, silver
medals for Kildare. When he said the name Feenagh/Kilmeedy for the
gold, well, we just went mental. Our small parish had just claimed top
spot in the country and we are so proud of our six girls. The history
makers are Tara Madigan, Melanie Gilbourne, Lorna Donegan, Emma Healy,
Ciara Heenan and Aisling Enright. It’s times like these we are so glad
we started up Community Games again in Feenagh/Kilmeedy. It goes to
show that no matter the size of your club if you put in the hard work
and dedication, the reward is there. The dance was magnificent, four
minutes of really highly technical dance moves. Katie Upton, our
teacher has put in over five months hard training with the group this
year. It’s also a reward for six years of entering competition in
Limerick Community Games and trying to win the elusive gold medals.
Tears of joy were shed on Sunday by parents and our great supporters
who have followed us all over. There was a mighty sing-song on the bus
coming back, the ceiling was hardly able to hold it. Katie Upton has
received great support from the parents of the dancers especially
Laura Gilbourne all year and on the day she got great help also from
Tara Hurley with the make-up. It was a super day in Athlone and once
again the organisers of HSE Community Games did a great job and the
facilities at the venue are top class. As for our brave dancers they
can take a much deserved break and enjoy the summer.
