Athlone Heroes 2014
It was our greatest ever weekend in Community Games as we brought back eight All Ireland Gold medals to Feenagh/Kilmeedy. A super two days in Athlone and here are some of the highlights. Such cheers in the dance area when the adjudicator called out Feenagh/Kilmeedy. Six of our dancers repeated last year’s success to win gold again. Well done to Lorna Donegan, Emma Healy, Melanie Gilbourne, Aisling Enright, Ciara Heenan and Carrie-Ann Devine. For the record teams from Monaghan and Kildare took the silver and bronze medals.
On to the running track and a dramatic finish in the girls under 10 sprint over 200 metres. Eimear Galvin had a great tussle with Aoibheann Costello from Galway as both dipped over the line together. The six judges could not decide who was the winner and Eimear was awarded a joint first place with the Galway girl. More drama arrived in the cross country relay race when David Galvin won our eight gold medal. David ran a super race to anchor Limerick to a great win over Mayo. He gave his all and you could see the effort that he put in after crossing the finish line.
Back to our dancers and all the hard work in Feenagh Hall paid off in Athlone. Dance teacher Catherine Upton continues to raise the bar in her innovative programme and preparation of teams. Hair and make – up by Laura Gilbourne and Brianna O’Connor was superb. Our team manager for the weekend was Laura Enright who did a great job. We must thank all the people who supported us this year and who sent on congratulations. Also to all in St. Mary’s Athletic Club who played a big part in David and Eimear winning their medals and their assistance to our athletics coach Jim Galvin.
Jim’s son Colm was also involved in Athlone and could have competed in two events as he did a county double in javelin and swimming. Mairide Bennis also qualified for the All-Ireland in cycling as did Patrick O’ Doherty.
Perhaps we could all use some examples from Community Games. Hard work, having belief in yourself and enjoying what you are doing are just some of the ingredients required to make it. If you have a dream then go for it.
We have competed against the best and our little area of Feenagh- Kilmeedy has once again gained national honours. Well done again and continued success to all in 2015.
